Gordon's Bay, known for its white sandy beaches and warm waters.

By Chelsea Hirschfield

Gordon's Bay is all about its water's edge, where the bay lies along side the sheer mountains of the Helderberg, providing protection to a picturesque cove that offers a absolute feast of water-based activities and a promenade lined with fish shops, coffee bars and restaurants. Gordon's Bay bustles during peak season. Bikini Beach is popular with the younger crowd who come here to play beach volleyball, sunbathe and surf, whilst the main beach is more popular with families and the water is gentler. However you don't have to be on the beaches of Gordon's Bay to appreciate this part of the world.

Come spend the day relaxing on Bikini Beach, a small man-made beach near the marina. Bikini Beach is one of Cape Town's three Blue Flag Beaches, which means it has a high level of water quality, facilities, cleanliness and safety. Bikini Beach is popular for sunbathing as it is sheltered from the wind. Kogel Bay (or Cool Bay) is just around the corner and is primarily a surfer's beach, but has a long stretch of white sand and a couple of exciting caves to explore. From the old harbour, a wide variety of boat and fishing trips can be chosen.

Join Melt & Tanya at The Long Bar Pub & Grill for good food, great hospitality and big screen sports. This is the perfect place to watch a big sporting event when the weather lets you down or when you've had enough of sight-seeing. Friendly service and South African hospitality is what you can expect to see and feel at the Long Bar Pub & Grill.

A sub-route of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, the Helderberg route is only a 15 minute drive from Cape Town's airport and is near the town of Somerset West. These vines lie on the slopes of the Helderberg and merge the influences of both a mountain and maritime climate, producing some very unique wines. The 25 members of the Helderberg route follow distinctly different methods of growing grapes, from a 300-year old historical cellar to state-of-the-art boutique wineries and visiting the wide range of family-owned estates and grand manor houses is a superb weekend or day's outing.

Evenings should include a leisurely stroll along the harbour wall or a sunset cruise from the old harbour, which also has a string of excellent seafood restaurants. And Gordon's Bay is only 40 minutes from Cape, so experiencing an alternative night life and still making it home is indeed an option. There is sufficient accommodation in the area and there is something for everybody to enjoy in Gordon's Bay.
