These awe-inspiring paintings are the work of artist Narangkar Glover. Her works are currently exhibiting at the Andrea Schwartz Gallery in a group exhibition entitled ‘Admit Eight’ in San Francisco. The Oakland-based painter has a self-confessed preoccupation with the past. She calls her work “autobiographical,” and Glover’s creative process begins with an “investigation” of her childhood memories.

The monument’s depictions of landscape captures the altered perception of the world that lives in one’s earliest memories.  Her figures are dwarfed by massive mountain ranges and cliffs, but this is not meant as a tactic for intimidation. Her subjects appear comforted by their surroundings and anxious to explore. There is a quiet serenity about Glover’s work, as well as a level of calmness and security that often abandons us by grade school. For these reasons these pieces are deeply affecting. They return viewers to a vulnerable state reminiscent of childhood, before embracing cynicism and forming a skin as thick as rawhide. Narangkar Glover’s works have the ability to bring a sentimental tear to one’s eye.
