How to enjoy a luxury holiday to Gran Canaria without the luxury price-tag

By Chuck Remington

Just off the north-west coast of Africa are the Canary Islands, the second most populous of which is Gran Canaria. This island with its winning combination of hot climate, 5* activities and rich culture all help to make a cheap holiday to Gran Canaria seem much more than its price-tag suggests.

When considering booking a luxury holiday, most people would (understandably) think of somewhere like the Caribbean or the Seychelles, but these often also come with a luxury price. But those with tighter purse strings can consider Gran Canaria. Offering temperatures to rival these more exotic destinations (average summer Gran Canaria temperatures reach 25-28˚C) as well as equally stunning turquoise waters and golden beaches, this Canary island really is about luxury.

Whilst the island does cater for the masses with larger resorts and high-rise hotels, it also offers more remote apartments and villas to ensure an element of exclusivity. The key to experiencing luxury in Gran Canaria is to get out of the main towns like the capital, Las Palmas, and the clubbing town of Playa de Ingles, and head to quieter towns and villages. For instance, Puerto de Mogn offers a sense of luxury due to its stunning marina, mountainous backdrop and the fact that the town has a general slower pace of life.

Just like other worldwide luxury destinations, Gran Canaria offers a wide range of land and sea-based activities to indulge in. Explore the island on a buggy safari, or spend a more relaxed day on the island's golf courses; neither of which would break the bank. But you can't come to this fantastic island without going off shore, and spending a day or two scuba-diving to see the ocean's rich sea life.

But the best way to experience the high life without having to worry about breaking the bank is to explore the cultural offerings of the island. The towns and villages all over the island are steeped in history, made up of centuries-old houses, monuments and meandering streets you can't help but get lost in. A cheap holiday to Gran Canaria will leave you feeling rich in culture and experience.
