Top Destinations for City Breaks in Winter

By Yasmin L. Houghton

Plenty of people aren't too fond of winter. The week stretching from Christmas and New Year's Eve provides people with several days off and an excuse for a good time, but through January and February the cold dark days can get a bit much. It's not surprising then that more and more people are looking to escape for several days - a city break is something to look forward to and keep you going until spring appears.

We start with Prague, where the King of Bohemia used to reign from, a city thankfully untouched by the Second World War and absolutely bursting with new life despite its old-world charm. Must-see sights include the Prague Astronomical Clock, the only one in the world that still works, and Prague castle, the largest in the world. Do take time off from the tourist track to sample some of the Czech Republic's best beers - the Czechs can boast the highest beer consumption per capita in the world, so they know a thing or two about good beer.

If you're after something more modern than historic try New York City. You won't need a guidebook to tell you about the world-famous landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, but you might want to check out what's hot at the moment on Broadway, which is rivalled only by London's West End in terms of theatre and musicals. New York is the perfect destination for Christmas shopping with practically every major brand having a flagship store in the city.

If Prague and New York sound a little too chilly then how about Rome? Fabulous Roman architecture and Italian food are two of many reasons to pick the Italian capital. Just make sure you look fashionable as Rome is a fashion capital of the world, despite its proximity to Milan.

If you're looking for a winter break you can enjoy an unforgettable run up to Christmas or have a fantastic start to the year. Combined with a trip somewhere closer to home - Bath or London maybe - and you'll soon find yourself safely into a new season with a spring in your step.
