By Tony Mariposa Xavier

Provided you are someone who enjoys fishing, walleye fishing could be the most edifying and worthwhile event. These fish aren't always easy to catch, but part of what makes fishing interesting is the challenge. Like any other types of fishing, learning to catch walleye involves learning about their habits and the best places and times to find them. Effective ideas for catching walleye will be focused on in this article to aid you in achieving greater results on your next fishing trip.

For summer fishing, you'll have more success if you fish in deeper water. In the spring, however, shallow water along the shore line is more productive. There are many different lures to choose from and a lot of them are in bright colors. However, for walleye, it's better to stick to lures that are more subdued, such as those with a silver or brown tone. Find an area where the water is swift and "crashes" through rocks or down a drop off. This action is very good for the water, as it makes it rich in oxygen. You will find more fish in these kinds of areas because fish gravitate towards water that is highly oxygenated. Another factor that will attract walleye to oxygen rich water is the fact that it also attracts the prey they feed upon, such as minnows. On very hot days, it may take a little more patience on your part, as the walleye, like just about every type of animal, tend to slow down when it's hot. Yet using the right jig or spinnerbait can wake up the walleye and get them biting.

Lake of the Woods in Minnesota and Canada is another lake that contains lots of walleyes, among many other species of fish. The Detroit River is one place where they have the walleye fishing competitions and they catch some whoppers there.

A lot of walleye fishers swear by jigging as the single-most effective method for catching walleye. What are jigs? Jigs are popular fishing lures that attract the fish with something, usually quite colorful, that is paired up with a hook and lead sinker. The body can resemble many different types of fish. Walleye are partial to the up/down vertical motion of jigs instead of the horizontal motion of spinner baits. Jigging requires a certain type of fishing rod so be certain to use the correct type. Ideally, you will want to buy a rod in the medium/medium-heavy category and no longer than 6-1/2 feet long. The rod must also have a certain springiness at the tip and a medium to fast action.

Walleye fishing is a great pastime, and if you haven't tried it you may want to research the best spots in your area and give it a go. Individuals could design a fishing vacation to an area where this fish type is plentiful, assuming there aren't walleyes in close proximity. Not just enjoyable to ensnare, walleyes are also good to eat.
