Sun Safety on holiday

By Edwin Crane

With our British summers as pathetic and non-existent as they are its no wonder we are all jet setting off to sunnier lands to get our yearly sunshine top up. What we are risking however is the 'binge' sunbathe and not preparing to protect ourselves from the sun and its strength. Due to the lack of need in Britain, may contribute to our whimsical approach to applying sunscreen whilst abroad.

The sun poses a serious risk to our health due to its cause of skin cancer. If we do not protect ourselves in the sun, we are putting ourselves at risk.

We are continually encouraged to wear sunscreen to ensure we are fully protected, however sometimes even this will not be enough to give us the protection we need. Staying out of the sun at peak times is another important factor to remember. Yet even though we know all of this, we continue to ignore the warnings, what's so hard about putting on a bit of cream, and since when did looking good become more important than the possibility of developing a life threatening disease?

Cancer is obviously without a doubt the most severe consequence for some of us who over indulge on the sun without protection, however the lesser consequences are still damaging to our health and skin. Burning, blistering and sunstroke are all negative effects of too much sun. Noticing any changes in moles and abrasions on the skins surface picks up skin cancer, and the earlier its noticed the better.

So the moral of the story is to slap on that sun cream. Vanity doesn't matter if you're facing death and so don't let the desire for a tan overtake your safety. Avoid the sunshine at its strongest - midday and cover yourself up if you have fair skin or quite a few moles.
