Mobi-Reportabuse is one of many web entrepreneurship ventures that have emerged in Ghana. Akin to how bicycles have transformed transportation in less-industrialized countries, cellphones, too, have literally revolutionized countless countries in the Majority World. Developed by Shadrach K. Amoako, Mobi-Reportabuse is a cellphone service that allows both witnesses and victims themselves to report abuse and domestic violence straight from their mobile device. Users can send images, videos, audio and text content via email, MMS or SMS.
There are numerous benefits to a cellphone reporting service, one of which being the ability for the Ghanian Police Service (DOVVSU) to access factual and concise reports on domestic violence and abuse. Furthermore, Mobi-Reportabuse allows for anonymity, which can be essential when social relationships are tenuous.
Mobi-Reportabuse generates daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports that are divided into categories like gender and type of reporter to allow for readability and accessibility.
While cellphones are omnipresent in Ghana, as GOOD reports in “African Entrepreneurs Are Making Ghana Into a Tech Startup Hub,” there is a lack of mobile services and apps that bear in mind local needs.
“For most people in Africa, the only possibility of accessing the Web is through their mobile phone,” World Wide Web Foundation CEO Steve Bratt told GOOD. “So a web entrepreneur must learn to design services that will work on even the simplest mobile devices.
