I can’t decide whether “Back to the Future” fans or sneakerheads are going to be more excited by the release of the 2011 Nike MAG. The MAG is the fictional self-lacing Nike worn by Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future II.’
The MAG has finally been made, but unfortunately, it cannot tie itself. What it can do is light up for five hours continuously. All that is needed to light the shoe is a full battery and a pinch of the shoe’s “ear” (the pouch located at the top of the shoe). The 2011 Nike MAG’s design is bound to be debated by sneaker fiends for years to come, but what isn’t debatable is the purpose behind the shoe.
Nike is releasing 1,500 pairs of the 2011 MAG, with each pair going up for auction on eBay. All of the proceeds from the auction, along with a $50-million donation made by Nike, will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The auction will last for 10 days starting Sept. 8 with 150 pairs being auctioned each day. Rumor has it that the first few pairs have sold for as high as $75,000.
