Festivals and holidays in Turkey

By Alfie Davis

Turkey has an extremely interesting history and is a country which has a fantastic culture. There are lots of events each year which share this amazing culture with the country's citizens as well as people from all over the world who visit the country. Part of the culture is creative arts and these are encouraged through a number of festivals which take place across the whole country each year so that people can show of their talent to like-minded people.

One of the largest events is Istanbul foundation for culture and arts' annual film festival in Istanbul. This festival is for people to come from all over Turkey to both show their films and to watch others in Istanbul's largest cinemas and theatres. The idea of the festival is to celebrate and encourage the creative individuals who are aiming to break into main stream areas and represent their home country of Turkey.

Istanbul isn't just home to the film festival though as it also hosts festivals for music, theatre and jazz each year too. The Jazz festival lasts alone for 18 days and has a number of different performances and concerts from amateur and professional musicians. In 2011 the concert had a tribute to the great Miles Davis who is an icon to many Jazz musicians.

These types of festivals don't just happen in Turkey's biggest city though, they take place all over the country and many occur in Ankara. Ankara has its own music and film festivals where young creative artists are encouraged to exhibit their work and they are rewarded with a number of awards which are starting to be recognised around the world.

Turkey is predominantly Islamic and so there are also religious holidays which take place each year. Kurban Bayrami and Ramadan are both public holidays in Turkey and during these times many people close their businesses to spend time with their families. Turkish people are very religious and so these holidays are of course extremely important to them.
