Family Holidays for Foodies - the Fiesta de la Exaltacion de Marisco

By Chris Brown

If your family holidays are getting a trifle predictable, why not think outside the box a little and book something that will not only entertain the kids, but also give you something other than sunburn and wallet fatigue to look forward to? You may ask what kind of cheap last minute holidays could make a promise like that, and to answer, we're going to speak a little Spanish - the Fiesta de la Exaltacion de Marisco. Get ready - it's fiesta time!

For 10 days, the town of O Grove in Galicia (northwest Spain) swells from a population of around 11,000 to over 200,000 for this delicious festival. The name, meaning 'the festival in honour of seafood', describes perfectly what the celebration is all about. While there is plenty of mouth-watering fresh seafood to enjoy (obviously!), there are plenty of other things to keep you and your family entertained whilst taking cheap last minute holidays here.

Those of you who haven't been Spain before are in for a real treat. A fiesta is not just a type of car by Ford, it's an incredible experience that can only be experienced in the sunny climate of Spain. It's events like these that make Spain holidays come to life. There's dancing, including traditional folk beats, and a plethora of musicians who perform, ensuring that everyone is having a thoroughly good time.

From humble beginnings, the festival in O Grove is world renowned - with the town even being nicknamed the 'seafood paradise'. From marquees, open air stalls and cafes and restaurants, the locals proudly serve up their finest mussels, scallops, oysters, cockles, barnacles and plenty more.

You're able to really make the most of your time abroad, immersing yourself in a culture that is really quite fascinating.
