Understanding the Impact of What You Drink While Smoking

By Kayla Kelly

People have been enjoying the pastime of smoking cigars with their favorite beverages for centuries. If you are asking "What should I drink while cigar smoking?", you will find that there really isn't a cut-and-dried answer to this question. The drinks that you choose to enjoy with your cigars will depend entirely on personal preference. That being said, there are certain guidelines that may help you to find pairings that you will enjoy.

Let's consider "purpose". One of the reasons that people smoke a cigar is to enjoy the different flavors offered by the tobacco and the wrapper. Cigar smokers who enjoy rating cigars have found that many drinks will actually alter the way the cigar tastes.

If you are smoking to rate a cigar or to find out what flavors it really offers, it's best to drink nothing or stick with water. Because water is odorless and tasteless, it won't change the way the cigar tastes. This allows all the flavors to come through in the smoke. However, drinking anything else will alter your perceptions.

Patience is another quality which will affect your enjoyment of cigar smoking. What we mean by that is that appreciation of the distinct flavors which cigar smoking has to offer is developed over time. One little tip here is the fact that a small chewing action as you exhale tends to increase the sensitivity of your pallet. Stick with it, and eventually, you'll come to appreciate the flavors more distinctly, and more deeply, than you thought you could. You just need to persist.

Popular alcoholic drinks that many cigar smokers enjoy include scotch, rum, and cognac. Wines and even flavorful, quality beer are also popular among cigar smokers. As you become a more experienced cigar smoker, you will find that your taste buds will lead you to the right drink. In other words, you'll begin to intuitively know what drinks to choose based on the flavor and strength of your cigar.
