UK Flights To Jerez Could Be Good Choice For Visiting Spain's Costa De La Luz

By Scott McKenzie

The Costa de la Luz, or Coast of Lights, is on Spain's south-western (Atlantic Coast), between the Portuguese border and Gibraltar. There are many attractions here which make the area a good destination for a holiday. There are long and sandy beaches on the coast, and inland there are charming small towns, such as the whitewashed Vejer de la Frontera. There is also a large national park on the delta of the Guadalquivir River, which is home to many rare species. UK flights to Gibraltar, Jerez and Seville could all be considered by those who wish to take the opportunity to explore this part of Spain.

Spain's Costa de le Luz (Coast of Light) lies in the south-west of the country, between the Portuguese border, and Gibraltar. Many of the tourist visitors to the area are in fact from other parts of Spain, although an increasing number of Northern Europeans (French and Germans) now come here for holidays.

Holidaymakers from the UK are probably more likely to be familiar with the adjoining Algarve coastline, which is just across the frontier in Portugal. Temperatures on the Costa de la Luz are broadly similar to those in the Algarve. Both regions are west of the Straits of Gibraltar, so they have Atlantic Ocean rather than Mediterranean coast lines.

Many of those who come to the Costa de la Luz are attracted by the long and excellent sandy beaches, and by the many hours of sunshine. Others enjoy activities such as horse riding, kite-surfing and other water-sports, and sports such as golf.

The region has some notable natural attractions, including the large Donana National Park, which covers the delta where the River Guadalquivir flows into the Atlantic. The park is mainly a wetland park, with shallow streams, marshes and coastal dune ecosystems.

Donana National Park protects some of Spain's most endangered species, including the Spanish Imperial Eagle, and the Iberian lynx. Other species seen here include deer, wild boar and thousands of migrating birds.

The Costa also has many attractive small towns, such as the white washed settlement of Vejer de la Frontera. This is situated on a low hill, overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar. Between 711 and 1248 the area was held by the Moors (Muslims) and much of the architecture in the town retains the Moorish style.

The Costa de la Luz is not that well known to English speaking visitors, but those who decide to explore the area will find many interesting attractions during their trip. UK flights to local airports such as Gibraltar, Seville and Jerez are all convenient ways to reach the Costa.
