Sun Country Airlines Resurrected and Stronger Than Before

By Jacobi Malavo

After the fall of Braniff Airlines, a group of motivated employees put their minds together and developed Sun Country Airlines. The people who started Sun Country loved their chosen fields in aviation, so they did what anybody would do - they created their own airline. The airline went a long way in their run of nearly twenty years, and in December, 2001, they went out of business due to the events of a few months before. Just like the phoenix who rises from the ashes, Sun Country Airlines was bought up and then put back into business. Just like a return to the early days, Sun Country has been doing what they do best and that is making passengers happy.

Much about Sun Country Airlines is fairly typical of many airlines because they all operate pretty close to the bone. The air carrier became a full-fledged scheduled airline in June of 1999. The next few years were very difficult for a number of typical reasons which included price wars. They had lost a little over 60 million dollars by 2000.

Just in December of 2010, announcements were made that Sun Country Airlines would be providing air service to Washington DC from Lansing Michigan. This is really tremendous news for Sun Country Airlines. Since they are based in Minneapolis, that is where the flight will begin.

In the fall of 2010, the airline was fully involved with bankruptcy proceedings and a plan for reorganization was in place. For that kind of situation, a judge has to preside and give an approval decision. But it is not always just the judge because all the applicable creditors will naturally want to see the plan, too. As you may know, during these kinds of proceedings the creditors must be repaid in some fashion. The usual way these proceedings work is for a percentage of cash to be repaid, and then there is a percentage of equity that is awarded to the creditors.

One of their flagship programs within the company is called Sun Country Vacations which was put into service recently. What Sun Country wanted to do is remove as much of the headache as possible from the vacation reservation process. What this program allows is for travelers to book everything in one single transaction: hotel, rental vehicles, airfare of course, and anything else they may need. Then we come to Sun Country Charters which is simply a service for organizations that want to charter or even lease aircraft. You should not be concerned about Sun Country Airlines being able to survive because they are doing all the right things to bring them back to full operation. All of their accumulated wisdom and experience will only serve them well in this process. They certainly have enough experience to know what needs to be done. It is unfortunate that economic events in recent years have had this effect on so many businesses. But when given the chance to shine and succeed, Sun Country Airlines knows how to do that.
