For those with powerful religious roots, Hilton Head Island, SC is a 'beacon of light'. Where you can the St James Baptist Church, this small island is the perfect place when you'd like to do a little soul searching in complete tranquility.

The Origins of St. James Church

This age old church is not only a religious landmark but also has some historic importance. It was founded in 1886 by the erstwhile members of the First African Baptist Church. Nowadays, the church stands tall as the only remaining representative of a community, Mitchelville, that housed former slaves. This church started functioning a couple of years before the Civil War ended, the brunt of the work carried out by freed slaves who lived here. From that time, this religious institution has been the foundation of spiritual guidance in the Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The St. James Baptist Church possesses the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating cultural institution in historic Mitchelville, based on reports.

While on the Hilton Head Island, you must also enjoy the sights of Mitchelville, the first freedman village in the United States. This small community houses the St James church and also the Cherry Hill School. This school was among the first ones, built way back in 1937, for the blacks living on the island. A fort, the Ft. Howell, also provides a unique sight seeing trip while you are on vacation in Hilton Head Island.
