By Adriana Noton

A limousine, also known as a limo, is a type of luxury sedan automobile or saloon vehicle. A professional chauffeur in a limousine service may operate this type of vehicle. The limo is considered the most expensive kind of ground transportation. It is generally associated with powerful and wealthy people.

The government, large companies ad broadcasters own most of the limos. The government uses them to transport officials. Executives at large companies use them. Most broadcasters use limos to transport their guests. There are some individuals and small companies that own limos for personal use. In some areas around the world, the limo service industry is competition for taxicabs.

The first of these vehicles was developed in 1902. A couple decades later, in Arkansas, Ambruster coach company manufactured the first stretch limousine. The company used this stretched vehicle to transport bands and their instruments. For many years after their development, stretch limos were called big band buses.

Limos come in different styles. Virtually every limo has a divider that separates the driver and passenger areas. The divider usually slides to open and is made from soundproof glass to allow for privacy. Passengers may use a controller for the divider or an intercom system to communicate with their driver. Traditional and modern limos are contrasting. Traditionally these vehicles could seat up to six people, including the driver. Today, some of these vehicles can fit up to 30 people. Limos in the past were just an extended version of a large car with a long wheelbase and frame. Modern limos come in a variety of vehicle models and have televisions, miniature bars and refrigerators, video players and audio systems within.

Limousine service is often used for special occasions. Some common occasions in which these vehicles are rented include: birthdays, bachelor or bachelorette parties, corporate events, concerts, school events, weddings, sporting events and funerals. Usually this service will pick individuals up and drop them off at their destination.

Renting prices range from company to company and depend on several factors. The majority of rental companies charge an hourly rater per person. What model of limo is used will definitely factor in to total cost. Price may be related to the total distance traveled.

Things to consider before booking a limo service: destination, number of passengers, amount of hours needed for rental, service value and limo model. Not every company is on the same level. In many cases, you pay for what you get, but by doing adequate researches and having a plan, you can make the choosing process more efficient. Be practical with your expectations.

Plan ahead and make reservations early to ensure a smooth ride. It is recommended that reservations be made at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Do not overlook price. Compare prices between companies. Budget and if necessary, collect money from other passengers to cover the cost. Each Toronto limousine company has its own price policies and some have special packages. Keep in mind that an 18 to 20 percent tip is custom for these services. Safety is important. Make sure the company you are working with is properly insured and licensed.
