Max Flesicher conceived of Betty Boop, who in the beginning was just a co-star in some of his other cartoons. Betty, who is known for her innocently sexual appeal, first appeared in Talkartoon on August 9, 1930. She was an intended combination of Clara Bow and Helen Kane. Ironically, despite the fact that Clara did not make the transition to talking films due to her Brooklyn accent, Betty's sometimes heavily accented voice worked just fine for her.

Betty was popular for a lot of reasons when she first arrived onto the scene. Arriving in the 1930's, she came out in the middle of the Great Depression. With her Jazz baby style, she more than likely reminded the audience of the more happy-go-lucky days of the past.

Betty is also attributed to being one of the first cartoon characters to signify a sexual woman. She wore high heels, short skirts, and had breasts. Many other cartoon females were simply the female counterparts to their male costars.

In several cartoons, Betty is also portrayed as fighting off male advances. Whether she was changing clothes, innocently flirting, or simply walking down the street, there always seemed to be a man nearby who wanted to take advantage of her. In a couple of episodes, cartoon co-stars rescued her to keep her from being assaulted.

After 1934, Betty's character changed once the National Legion of Decency registered complaints. Betty began wearing full skirts and dresses and without a significant other, became a career woman.

These days, people enjoy collecting Betty Boop for multiple reasons. Since her creation, she has come to symbolize sexuality, innocence, and charm. Her image can be found on everything from postcards to beach towels and glasses. You can also find her on personal checks.
