Travel Food Tips for Staying Alert and Healthy

By Molly Mchannon

Eating healthy while travelling is a challenge. If you don't eat healthy all the rest of the time I don't know why you would bother, but if you are health conscious, travelling could provide a challenge to healthy eating.

First of all, airport fast food and airline food is dreadful and very bad for you, so much fat and sodium. The only other option I can recommend is to bring your own.

Nowadays, there are many restaurant options in airports around the globe, so you might be able to find some healthy options there, but if the cost is a consideration, then bringing your own is your only option.

Thinking about what type of food will travel best is probably where you need to start. A peanut butter sandwich travels just fine, but it isn't the most healthy option I can think of, although very satisfying and full of protein. There are many options to choose from to get a healthy meal or snack while you are travelling.

Let's decide what will travel best. Hard boiled eggs travel well although I wouldn't want to be sitting beside you in those close quarters if you started eating hard boiled eggs. Think about your travelling neighbors, you don't want to eat something offensive to their noses. No tuna either.

Chop some carrots and celery, this is a great option and with the dryness of the air on an airplane, these vegetables are full of water. Also peppers and cucumbers, if you put them in a container that will not bruise them up, they will be crisp and fresh when you need a healthy snack.

For something slightly more substantial, a sandwich is probably most transportable. Turkey or chicken or even low fat ham are good options on some really good bread. You could even top it with some tomato or lettuce that will travel just fine. This is something a little more filling and it is probably not a good idea to get empty on an airplane flight, it might make you a little air sick. Today they are even making more healthy crackers and cookies, so if you need something to crunch besides the vegetables you brought with you, crackers are a good option. Then, in order to satisfy your sweet tooth, some healthy cookies will help to finish it up. This should be easy and satisfying.

If bringing your food from home doesn't appeal to you, plan which restaurant you will want to choose. Look at the menu before you allow yourself to be seated and decide if they have a healthy fare for you. If not, move on to the next restaurant, we all know that there are lots to choose from.

When all is said and done, you are in charge. If you really want to find something healthy to eat, you will. There is just too much out there today to choose from to not be able to eat healthy if you choose.

It helps to be informed and to know what you want, especially when you are on the road.
